EASTCHESTER (WABC) -- Yankees manager Joe Girardi not only won the World Series, but he also helped an accident victim on his way home from the game.
The accident happened at 2:25 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of the Cross County Parkway at the Hutchinson River Parkway prior to the New Rochelle Road exit.
Police say a woman lost control of her car along a long blind curve and crashed into a wall.
"The guy wins the World Series, what does he do? He stops to help," Westchester County police officer Kathleen Cristiano told LoHud.com. She was among the first to arrive at the accident scene. "It was totally surreal."
The driver was stunned by the accident, but otherwise uninjured, police said.Police were in the area conducting a driving while intoxicated checkpoint on the parkway. Girardi had passed that checkpoint about 15 minutes earlier.
When the 911 call came through about a car accident a short distance away, officers suspended the checkpoint and responded to the crash.
Cristiano said as she and other officers approached the scene, Girardi was "jumping up and down, trying to flag me down."
The driver, Marie Henry, 27, of Stratford, Conn., declined to be taken to the hospital.
Police said Girardi risked his life by parking his car along the right side of the parkway, and then running across the traffic to get to the injured motorist. The area is notorious for the blind curve and speeding cars.
