Disturbing animal cruelty case on LI

Sunday, November 08, 2009

A horrible stench and complaints from a rescue group resulted in horrific charges of animal cruelty against a Suffolk County woman.

Sharon McDonough lives at a home at 18 Awixa Place in Selden, and what investigators found was a backyard burial ground for dogs.

SPCA investigators dug up at least 20 animal carcasses.

"We recovered, at that time, five dogs," Lloyd Gross said. "Five dogs that were cramped in small cages that appeared to be in imminent danger were removed. There was a cat removed, a hamster and a bird."

The 43-year-old McDonough is accused of torturing, killing and burying the animals in her yard.

The suspect lived in the house with her seven children, who range in age from infants to adults. One of McDonough's sons spoke about what life was like inside the house.

"I just look at it like it was a concentration camp for the animals," son Douglas said. "And my sisters and me, we got the end of it too."

McDonough is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, and her children are in protective custody.
