Nathan's hikes hot dog prices

CONEY ISLAND (WABC) -- Many diners at a famed Brooklyn eatery are doing a double take when they see the bill.

Coney Island's Original Nathan's Famous is now charging $3.15 for a plain hot dog.

"Wow, that's steep," electrician Frank Lehman told the New York Daily News. "I had no idea they cost that much now. I could buy a whole package of hot dogs for that much."

Officials blame rising costs for the price hike, claiming the increase was necessary to offset price increases in everything from beef to buns.

The price of a hot dog was previously $2.95, up from $2.75 two years ago. When Nathan Handwerker opened his first store in 1916, the price tag was a mere nickel.
