Suspicious powder sent to U.N. missions

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Federal investigators and the NYPD are trying to figure out who sent letters containing suspicious powder to three missions to the United Nations.

The letters were delivered to the Austrian Mission on 3rd Avenue between 39th and 40th Streets; the Uzbekistan Mission on 2nd Avenue at 43rd Street; and the French Mission on East 47th Street.

All of the letters were delivered between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

A field test done on the powder sent the Uzbekistan Consulate came back negative for Anthrax or any other dangerous substance, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Brown said.

The Health Department is testing the powder and expects to know more on Tuesday.

All three envelopes had Dallas, Texas, postmarks, and at least one contained a note referencing al-Qaida, Brown said.

Officials said 15 people at the French Mission were decontaminated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
