Water main break disrupts Greenwich Village

Monday, November 16, 2009

A water main break in Lower Manhattan has closed several streets during the cleanup effort.

The break happened around 4:30 p.m. at 233 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village Sunday. The 12-inch main was shut down to be repaired. As a result, water service was disrupted to five businesses and approximately 30 customers along Carmine Street between Bleecker and 6th Avenue.

"The ground just kind of rose up, and it looked just like a big bubble was rising," witness Grady Thibeault said. "And then all the sudden it popped and cracked, and water just started shooting out of the ground. Another section opened up, and it was just a river flooding down Carmine Street. The River Carmine, people are calling it already."

No surrounding buildings sustained water damage.
