Long Island resident must get rid of pet chickens

GREAT NECK (WABC) -- A Long Island resident has been told he must get rid of his pet chickens.

The Great Neck Village board of trustees refused this week to lift a ban on the birds.

Now, Alfred Basal must find a new home for Fluffy, Cutie and four other chickens.

The birds are considered a nuisance under village ordinance.

Basal bought the chickens about a year ago and has been keeping them in a backyard coop. He was issued a notice of violation in February. He appealed, arguing that the chickens were educational because they produce about six eggs a day.

Newsday reports that some neighbors expressed concern about salmonella, avian influenza and noise from the birds' clucking.
