SYOSSET (WABC) -- A Long Island school board can now boast that its newest member is the youngest official elected across the state of New York.
That school board is in Syosset, where the election turned controversial this year.
Not just because 18-year-old senior class president Josh Lafazan won while still attending high school, but because he won despite claims that his dad stole absentee ballot records on the eve of the election.
Lafazan celebrated with classmates Tuesday night. And when the counting was done, Lafazan won by a wide margin.
He and his dad believe a robo-call campaign against him backfired, and ignited voter anger against the superintendent's high salary.
District officials say they were advised by their attorney to make the call, but some voters accused them of trying to smear the Lafazan family and derail Josh's campaign.
"I think it's great to inject some young blood into the school board," Syosset resident Lance Gordon said.
Lafazan has railed against what he believes is a "bloated schools budget" and the superintendent's half a million dollars in salary and benefits - the highest paid in the state.
