Baldwin residents get help after Hurricane Sandy

BALDWIN, Long Island. (WABC) -- For two weeks the residents in this Baldwin neighborhood submerged for a while in sewage and contaminated water.

They have been trying to get someone, anyone to hear of their health concerns. That finally came Wednesday.

Donna Ayers' home of 36 years is destroyed. Her furniture, her worldly possessions soaked in raw sewage that filled her house, upsetting Donna and her daughters to no end.

A day after Sandy's initial destruction, Jeff Mitchel Press took a video of what he and his neighbors say shows the raw sewage and water contaminated with oil that flooded their streets and homes.. A short geyser of it still shooting through a manhole cover.

The stench so bad they say, they left their houses only to return to a host of health concerns and no one stepping up to help.

Their complaints reached high enough though that a small army of officials, led by Nassau County Executive, Edward Mangano appeared in their neighborhood. A health assessment team will now canvas each and every house.

"Here these people are suffering with raw sewage in their home. We now have an industrial hygienist who will begin, under the supervision of the department of health remove this health hazard," Mangano said.

"FEMA is here today. Everybody is going to get a full and complete inspection," said Joe Scannell, County Legislator.

They will then, with the homeowner's permission, bring in contractors.

"The health hazards will be removed by a qualified contractor under the supervision of the department of health," Mangano said.

Richie Barone, who has moved into a hotel doesn't believe the houses will ever be in move in condition again.

"You can't take this stuff out of walls. And then close it up again. Its not going to be OK," Barone said.
