Boy killed when bus crashes into Hempstead home

HEMPSTEAD (WABC) -- A 6-year-old boy was killed and at least 12 people were injured when a public bus crashed into a house on Long Island Tuesday night.

The 35-year-old pedestrian who allegedly caused the bus driver to swerve is at Nassau University Medical Center in serious condition.

Police say he repeatedly ignored the bus driver's horn and continued to cross the street even as the bus was bearing down on him.

As the bus swerved to avoid the man, a 6-year-old boy was putting on his pajamas.

"It is a bad thing that happened to my brother, he's dead now, he is gone, he is an angel now," said Joshua Granados, victim's brother.

Josue Granados witnessed a horror last night that no child, no person ever should.

One second his little brother David was putting on his pajama pants and the next second, he was pinned under a bus.

"I want him back, I want God to get someone else instead, I wish no one rented buses so this wouldn't happen," Joshua Granados said.

The Granados brothers were just a year apart, raised more like twins.

Tuesday night, their mother was cooking dinner as the boys got ready for bed in their first floor bedroom facing Fulton Avenue.

Wednesday, friends cleared away debris in what is left of it.

"When I see the bus, I think he was on the bed, but he wasn't on the bed," said Maribel Molina, David's mother.

7-year-old Josue escaped with barely a scratch, but 6-year-old David was trapped under the bus.

Police say the 50-year-old driver of the NICE bus swerved to avoid a pedestrian in the road.

"He did not react to the sound of the horn and continued to walk from south to north," said Inspector Kenneth Lack, Nassau County Police Department.

In the process of trying to avoid the pedestrian, the bus driver lost control and drove up onto the lawn of 505 Fulton Avenue in Hempstead and then plowed into the front bedroom where the Granados brothers were getting ready for bed.

Their father Santos rushed to rescue his younger son.

"I opened the window and my son was there," Santos Granados said.

The cruel randomness of David's death, a child run over by a bus in his own bedroom, seems even more devastating when described by his big brother, who seems to have not fully grasped the terrible loss his family has suffered.

"The bus crashed on my brother for good," Josue Granados said.
