Bruno, last dog at Sandy shelter moved

Saturday, March 16, 2013

An emergency shelter for Long Island pets left homeless by Superstorm Sandy has closed and the last dog has been moved.

Nassau County officials say Bruno the Rottweiler is being taken to Northwind Kennels in Bedford, in Westchester County.

Bruno's owner lost his home in Long Beach during the storm and is unable to care for his pet. The man has been living in his car and looking for work.

Nassau County SPCA spokesman Gary Rogers said both Bruno and his owner cried during visits.

County Executive Ed Mangano said hundreds of people have come forward offering to adopt Bruno.

He said Northwind Kennels will decide where Bruno will be placed.

A total of 515 pets were housed in the emergency shelter in the weeks and months after Sandy.
