A porpoise named Noodle has been released off Long Island, six months after he stranded himself off Maine.

The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation said Saturday the male harbor porpoise was let go about five miles offshore Shinnecock Inlet.

The group says prior to his release, a satellite tag was attached to the 70-pound porpoise's dorsal fin. Maps tracking his movements will be available for public viewing on the foundation's website.

Noodle stranded himself off New Brunswick, Maine last October and was brought to the Riverhead Foundation for rehabilitation.

He got his name because at first he was too weak to float, so rescuers built a floatation device for him out of foam noodles.

He was treated for lungworm and gained 15 pounds.
