Police on Long Island are looking for a thief who hit a place dedicated to the victims of the Newtown school shooting.

Nassau County detectives say someone stole an 8-inch brass bell from the Masone Beach playground on Waterford Road in Island Park.

Police think it happened between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, less than 48 hours after the site opened.

The bell was inscribed with the number 26 for the 26 students and educators who died at Sandy Hook Elementary, as well as the quote, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings," from Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life."

Anyone with information about the case can contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
