Judge upholds suspension of blue laws after Sandy

PARAMUS, N.J. -- Citing the "unprecedented damage" caused by Superstorm Sandy, a state judge has told a northern New Jersey town that it must temporarily set aside its Sunday shopping ban.

Gov. Chris Christie temporarily suspended Bergen County's so-called blue laws after County Executive Kathleen Donovan made the request.

But officials in Paramus, where the laws are stricter than the county rules, challenged the directive. They fear that some may use the storm as an excuse to weaken the blue laws, which were enacted 60 years ago.

Bergen County Administrator Edward Trawinski said that he expects the blue laws will only be suspended for this Sunday. He also says the county plans to ask Governor Christie early next week to lift the order suspending the blue laws.
