NewsCopter 7 over the scene where a tire flew into a car on Route 3 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
EAST RUTHERFORD (WABC) -- Police are investigating why a tire flew off a box truck and into another vehicle on Thursday morning.
The accident happened around 8:48 a.m. on Route 3 in East Rutherford.
Investigators said the front driver's side tire off of a box truck flew off as the truck was heading eastbound on Route 3.
The tire went over the divider and struck the windshield of a car heading westbound.
The driver of a Kia wagon sustained neck and back injuries. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. His condition was not immediately released, although authorities said he was alert and conscious at the scene of the crash.
The company that owns the box truck was issued two equipment violations at the scene. The truck was impounded and will be inspected on Friday by the NJ State Police.
