Guards injured in fights on Rikers Island

Two separate fights broke out at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center on Rikers Island Tuesday night.

The fights happened at 6:30 p.m. in two different housing areas at the complex.

One of the fights involved two inmates. The other was between four inmates.

When correction officers responded, they were attacked by the inmates.

Thirteen correction officers and three captains were injured. No injuries were life threatening.

Four inmates were treated at the jail.

Everything was put under control rather quickly, officials said.
