HARLEM (WABC) -- A few dimly lit candles still burn in honor of young life that no longer shines, 18-year-old Tayshana "Chicken" Murphy.
"Her friend, her friends keep it going. Light her a candle and stuff," said Orena Rosario, a neighbor.
Last month, the high school basketball star was gunned down by three men on the fourth floor of Grant Houses in Harlem. They have been arrested.
"She was a person who had something going for herself, she was a good friend," Rosario said.
In the hours that followed the point guard's death, large, loving message boards went up.
Her nickname was affectionately etched on the walls.
But just three weeks later, in the stairwell on the same floor where she was shot in the head, more etchings have gone up.
This time they are not so positive.
Not silly, but hateful, threatening and anti-gay comments and pictures according to sources were written about Murphy.
They are all so derogatory that Eyewitness News can't air any of it.
One resident was flat out scared and doesn't want to be identified.
The New York Housing Authority reported the graffiti to police on Sunday.
It has already been covered with a fresh coat of paint.
