Two more sex attacks reported in Brooklyn
WINDSOR HEIGHTS (WABC) -- Police in Brooklyn are now investigating two new sexual assaults after separate incidents were reported just hours apart. The most recent incident happened early Monday morning, when a woman groped by a man who may be responsible for a series of attacks spanning months.
The latest assault happened just after midnight in Windsor Terrace, where police say the attacker went after a 20-year-old woman walking on Vanderbilt Street.
Police say the victim, who was wearing headphones, turned around and spotted the attacker behind her. The man put his hand on a car, possibly on the hood, which was later extensively examined by police for prints.
The woman took off her headphones and tried to make it to her destination, but the suspect attacked.
According to authorities, he groped her breasts with both hands, she screamed and fought back, and he ran. He vanished toward Greenwood Cemetery, and police say it appears he knows the area well.
The victim was taken into a nearby building, where she was interviewed by detectives. She described the suspect as a 5-foot-4 Hispanic man wearing a dark tank top and jeans. Detectives believe she would be able identity her attacker.
This could be the 12th attack in six months around the same area of Brooklyn. Detectives have been working the other cases relentlessly.
"They are doing an awful lot, a lot of canvassing is going on," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said. "They are actually showing videos to the witnesses, taking out laptop computers, showing it in places such as central booking, where arrests are being processed."
The pattern started with an assault in Park Slope that was caught on a surveillance camera. And there is a common thread.
Police say many of the victims are petite white females, wearing skirts. They are attacked at night as they enter their buildings, as was the case in the latest attack.
There are wanted posters of at least two suspects and video of a third. In one of the attacks, the woman was raped. But so far, there have been no breakthroughs in the race to break this pattern of attacks.
In the other case, police are trying to find the man responsible for a brazen sexual assault in Sunset Park in which a 35-year-old woman was attacked, sexually assaulted and robbed right outside Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic church on 59th Street.
The assault and robbery happened near the church's parking lot at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
Police are trying to determine if all the cases are linked, but do not believe the church assault to be part of the same pattern.
