'Phantom of the Opera' holds 10,000th performance

NEW YORK -- "The Phantom of the Opera" is making musical history on Broadway.

The production held its 10,000th performance Saturday in New York City's storied theater district.

2011 was reportedly the show's highest-earning year, raking in more in a single week than in any other week since it began its run on Broadway.

It made over $1,500,000 during that record-breaking week.

The show has made $845 million.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical first opened on Broadway on Jan. 26, 1988.

It is an adaptation of the French novel by Gaston Leroux.

There was a giant cake and special curtain call at Saturday's historic performance at the Majestic Theater.

It is the first musical to accomplish such a feat.

"The Phantom of the Opera", now in its 24th year, is the longest running musical in Broadway history.
