Wild winds cause damage in our area

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Wild winds blew into our area on Saturday.

Tourist Kartik Tippiriddy might be the only person in Times Square loving the cold.

He was the only person we found wearing short sleeves.

"It's a very nice experience. The cold breeze and the New York downtown," Tippiriddy said.

But it wasn't a nice experience in Newark, where the powerful wind blew down an abandoned auto body shop.

Firefighters say the already collapsed roof pushed the walls of the building into the street.

"Neighbors did report seeing squatters inside the building recently so we did a thorough search with cameras and robots and were able to determine that was negative. There was no one in the building," Deputy Chief Jim Wentz of the Newark Fire Department said.

Back in Times Square, no wind damage, just lots of people trying to stay warm.

"Well this jacket is pretty good. It's like a down jacket. You know you dress a couple pairs of socks, boots that keep you warm. You just want to make sure you're warm enough," one tourist said.

Meteorologist Jeff Smith says gusty winds early will gradually subside after midnight.
