NEW YORK (WABC) -- Some Manhattan and Brooklyn lawmakers are asking Macy's to return the Fourth of July fireworks to the East River.
Several elected officials are holding a rally at Brooklyn Bridge Park Monday.
The show was moved to the Hudson River in 2009 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's journey up the river.
Macy's spokesperson Orland Veras responded to these requests, stating:
"Macy's 4th of July Fireworks have been fired from various waterways/locations in New York City for more than 30 years. Macy's works closely with various city agencies on the show with many factors contributing to the location including show design, scale/size of the pyrotechnics, safety requirements, city resources and secured public viewing location availability.
"This year, Macy's Fireworks will take place on the Hudson River with barges positioned between 18th and 48th Streets providing 2 miles of public viewing space. While the show will be on the Hudson River this year, Macy's Fireworks will continue to take place in and around all of New York City's waterways, and will not be a permanent fixture in any one location. Exclusively limiting the show to any particular area would greatly hinder the creative freedom that has made it the nation's best and largest Independence Day display."
