CASTLE HILL (WABC) -- A hit and run accident has left two 17-year-olds in critical condition in the Bronx.
The vehicle struck the young man and woman at White Plains Road and Bruckner Boulevard in the Castle Hill section of the Bronx.
The accident happened around 5:30 a.m. as the two people tried to cross the roadway.
The victims were being treated at Jacoby Hospital. Their injuries were described as life threatening.
The accident left a grim trail its wake: the victims' clothing and medical equipment.
But the debris also included potential clues: car parts that could help police find the hit and run vehicle.
The crash took place around 5:40 Saturday morning, and the driver just kept on going.
"I don't really walk this intersection just because it's so busy," said one neighborhood resident. "And the cars just keep flying."
Indeed the intersection of Bruckner Boulevard and White Plains Road is a busy one.
The street is actually the service road of the Bruckner Expressway.
There is a constant mix of car and truck traffic.
Many pedestrians are forced to scramble at the intersection, while others make poor decisions as they cross the street.
"Most of the time you have to make sure that they stop," said another resident. "And also you've got to look at the sign to make sure it says walk. If it don't, you're in trouble."
Police say the victims, a 17-year old male and a female, were not in the crosswalk--instead walking diagonally across the intersection when they were struck.
Police believe the driver may have gotten onto the westbound Bruckner Expressway.
Police are looking for a gray BMW with damage to its front end, last seen headed westbound on Bruckner Boulevard.
