NEW YORK (WABC) -- Police are looking for the person who abandoned a young baby, just hours old, outside a housing complex in Queens.
An eyewitness heard the baby crying outside the building in Woodside just before midnight Sunday.
Police say the newborn was wrapped in towels and sheets and appears to be healthy.
She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where the staff tells Eyewitness News that they've been getting lots of calls from people who want to adopt her.
It was her crying that saved her the life. Someone at the Woodside Houses heard her screams late Sunday night and called for help.
The nameless baby girl is being treated in the neonatal intensive care unit at Elmhurst Hospital, where a spokesman says she's healthy and responsive.
Hospitals like Elmhurst offer safe havens for parents who can't take care of their new infants, no questions asked. Officials say leaving a child with doctors and nurses is a better alternative than abandoning them in the cold night as what happened to this case.
Investigators continue to search for the baby's parents and piece together why this baby was left alone to fend for herself. She was discovered on a grassy courtyard strewn with garbage.
The baby is now under the care of the administration of children's services, but she'll remain at the hospital for at least 2 to 3 more days.
