BROOKLYN (WABC) -- The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating a night of extreme vandalism at Green-Wood Cemetery.
Police say they have surveillance video showing some of the attacks on 43 memorials and monuments.
The vandalism happened on Tuesday night.
Green-Wood is one of New York City's landmarks. The famous and infamous have been buried at the cemetery for over a century and a half, including Leonard Bernstein, Boss Tweed, Charles Ebbets, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Horace Greeley, baseball legends, politicians, artists, entertainers, inventors, and Civil War generals and other veterans.
The damage is estimated at 100-thousand dollars.
Security cameras did capture an individual who may have been involved in the vandalism. That videotape has been turned over to detectives from the Hate Crimes Squad, which is investigating.
Repairs have already begun. The cemetery says it will pay the cost of restoring the graves, but it is also asking for donations to help cover those costs. Click here for more information about how to donate.
Anyone with information in regards to this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). You can also submit tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577. All calls are strictly confidential.
