Suspects arrested in NYPD shooting; officer promoted
NEW YORK (WABC) -- The officer who was shot after stopping an alleged robbery in the Bronx was promoted to detective from his hospital bed before being released Friday, while police say the manhunt for two suspects on the loose resulted in two arrests.
Officer Ivan Marcano was promoted to detective Friday morning at the Bronx hospital where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the chest. Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined Police Commissioner Ray Kelly at Bronx Lebanon Hospital for the ceremony, since Marcano was unable to attend the regular NYPD promotion ceremony at Police Headquarters. Shortly after 11 a.m., Marcano was released from the hospital.
Meanwhile, police say both suspects are under arrest after one was apprehended Thursday night and the other surrendered Friday morning. Jason Leiva, 20, was arrested after the NYPD released his name and photograph. The other suspect, Rodian Ortega, 17, was believed to have been the getaway driver.
Both are charged with Attempted Murder, Felony Assault, Robbery, Criminal Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Criminal Use of a Firearm and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.
The incident began on Burnside Avenue in the Morris Heights neighborhood around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. And what Marcano did after he was shot is truly remarkable.
Police say the 27-year-old officer was riding in a car with his girlfriend when saw a man being robbed by three others. He got out of the car, gun drawn, and identified himself as a police officer. That's when one of the suspects opened fire. Marcano was hit, and the suspects took off in a white Mustang.
But they didn't get far. Marcano's girlfriend was racing him to the hospital when he spotted the thieves about a block away. The getaway car crashed, sparking a second gunfight that was caught on video.
"Officer Marcano had fired one handed as he used his other hand to continue to apply pressure to his wound," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
With a bullet still lodged in his chest, Marcano moved from position to position, firing at the suspects.
"In a remarkable display of marksmanship and cool under fire, Officer Marcano fired, striking one of the suspects in the head," Kelly said. "He died on the sidewalk next to the Mustang."
The other two gunmen fled in opposite directions, leaving behind a semi-automatic weapon in their car. Marcano followed one, but stumbled onto an ambulance that rushed him to Bronx Lebanon Hospital. An extensive manhunt ensued until the two arrest were made.
"God was with Officer Marcano," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "But he showed once again the people who work in the NYPD are there to protect us. They put their lives on the line."
Marcano, the 12th NYPD officer who has been shot this year, is expected to make a full recovery. The shooting came a day after the murder of Nassau County police officer Arthur Lopez on the Cross Island Parkway.
