staten island assault robbery

Four teenagers were caught on video viciously attacking a 53-year-old man for no reason other than to take his iPhone on Staten Island.

The victim says it happened so quickly he never had a chance to react.

One minute he's leaning against this fire hydrant talking on his cell phone the next he's on the ground trying to protect himself from the onslaught of blows.

53-year-old Marcos Gonzalez stepped outside to make a phone call to his family in Mexico when four teenagers jumped him.

They punched and kicked him for what seemed like an eternity

"They broke my nose," he told Eyewitness News, "My lip, my finger, they kicked me and hit me a lot on my head."

It happened nine days ago on Westervelt Avenue in Staten Island.

Gonzalez was working at his family's Laundromat and his son was working next door at the deli when violence descended.

Eyewitness News was told the pack of thugs grabbed his iPhone before running away.

Detectives are hoping someone will recognize the teenagers in the surveillance video and call authorities.

Meanwhile his wounds have healed but Marcos Gonzalez lives in a state of fear

"We are immigrants. We didn't come here to hurt anybody, we came to work honorably," Gonzalez said.

His family hopes the video will be enough to catch his young attackers.
