Woman wakes up at hospital with man groping her

NEW YORK (WABC) -- A woman says she woke up at Kings County Hospital with a man touching her, and he wasn't a doctor.

On the fifth floor of the criminal court building in Downtown Brooklyn, suspect 52-year-old Greg Campfield stood silent as a judge set his bail.

He's charged with forcible touching and sexual abuse in the third degree.

Prosecutors allege he sexually assaulted a woman being treated in Kings County Hospital's emergency room.

The victim's brother still can't believe it happened.

"I want answers. I want to know why. The hospital is supposed to be a safe haven, when you bring an unhealthy person here, and for something like that to happen to my sister, I'm hysterical about it," the victim's brother said.

Eyewitness News is concealing his identity to protect his sister.

She says the attack happened shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday morning.

She was asleep and on medication in the Emergency Room and alleges the suspect groped her with his hands and woke her up.

"She didn't know what was going on. She just woke up and this man was groping her," the victim's brother said, "When she woke up she said she saw the guy touching her private parts."

He says his sister screamed and doctors and nurses ran to help.

The suspect, who was another patient, didn't even try to get away.

The hospital released a statement Tuesday evening saying, "HHC is aware that this morning a female patient alerted staff that she was assaulted by another patient. Security was immediately alerted and the male patient was turned over to the NYPD. We are ensuring that the patient is receiving all the care and support she and her family need."

What city hospitals need is more security according to the hospital police union.

They claim cops on the job are overworked and understaffed and more officers are needed in city hospitals.

"Let's get them trained and into these facilities so situations like this will not occur again," said Clark Pena, Hospital Police PBA.

The victim's brother raced to the hospital to find out what happened to his sister, but says he quickly grew frustrated with a lackluster response from Kings County, so he called Eyewitness News and his attorney.

"There's no right in this situation, we don't know if this is the first time it has ever happened, but certainly there's mishandling by the hospital in every manner," said John O'Rourke, victim's attorney.
