Work is expected to begin next week to replace the boom of a crane that nearly snapped off during Superstorm Sandy and dangled precariously over a midtown Manhattan block near Carnegie Hall.

The city Buildings Department says the operation will begin next Friday, May 10.

A Buildings Department spokesman says that as a precaution two residential buildings at 171 W. 57th St. and 911 Seventh Ave. and one school at 165 W. 57th St. will be vacated that Friday and Saturday night.

Two westbound lanes of West 57th Street will also be closed on Friday morning and the entire street will be closed on Saturday morning.
