Father in hospital after driver crashes into bodega

Friday, June 21, 2013

Down comes a New York State license plate from on top of the awning of the East Village grocery - perched there 24 hours after a driver mowed over 3 bodega workers, including 63-year-old Muhammed Akkas Ali. However that is not it - workers plucked a chunk of the front grill from the 12-foot awning, too.

"It was a terrible accident," said the victim's son, Rukanul Islam.

However, police are calling it criminal they say 32-year-old Shaun Martin was under the influence around 7 Wednesday morning when he barreled down 2nd Avenue in a white Nissan Altima. First, they say he took out a tree, then a Muni-Meter, fire hydrant, then lastly, crash-landed into a 63-year-old father of four at the corner of East 4th. He was arranging flowers, so his back was turned.

"Everybody's very upset. My mother, she can't stop crying," said Islam.

Now, the Bangladeshi immigrant has a two-month recovery ahead of him. His son says his dad is still at Bellevue with severe leg and head injuries. He has yet to regain consciousness.
