NEW YORK -- A doctor who examined a nanny accused of killing two children says the woman suffered brain damage during a suicide attempt, but is still fit for trial.
Prosecutors say Yoselyn Ortega stabbed the kids to death then cut her own throat. Dr. Ankur Saraiya said the damage from the injuries was not substantial enough to interfere with her ability to stand trial for murder.
The testimony Thursday was part of an ongoing competency hearing. Ortega's lawyer is challenging the decision made earlier this year that Ortega is fit. She says Ortega's delusions and injuries mean she can't understand the case against her. The hearing resumes Monday.
The bodies of 2-year-old Leo and 6-year-old Lucia Krim were discovered in the bathtub of their Upper West Side home on Oct. 25 by their mother.
