NEW YORK (WABC) -- Two men were arrested in Queens on charges of raising money to fund terrorist activities, ultimately aimed at harming U.S. soldiers overseas.
The suspects are Humayoun Ghoulam Nabi,27, a Pakistani national living in Queens, and Ismail Alsarabbi, 32, a Kuwaiti residing in Brooklyn.
They were both arraigned on Tuesday in Queens Criminal Court on charges of attempting to providing material support for an act of terrorism and conspiracy.
Their arrests culminated a three year probe by an undercover NYPD officer.
The two were allegedly planning to start a non profit organization to raise money to buy boots, jackets and other equipment for terrorist organizations operating overseas.
According to investigators, Nabi compared his efforts to that of Osama Bin Laden and stated his desire to build a network of supporters, use a non-profit to avoid suspicion when transferring money overseas, and help close the equipment gap that he believed provided Western forces with at advantage over militants.
Nabi allegedly stated he would focus on providing warm clothing, shoes, and electronics.
Lawyers for both defendants say their clients were victims of entrapment.
Police say they bought samples of winter gear to try out but hadn't sent them overseas yet.
Police say the suspects believed the key to beating U.S. forces overseas was through properly outfitted Taliban soldiers.
