BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WABC) -- There's a debate in Bridgeport, Connecticut, about the city imposing strict curfews and installing surveillance cameras.
In the state's larges city, it's against the law for Allan Grimes to be out on the street late at night.
Not just him, but anyone under the age of 18 is subject to the city's new curfew.
After a string of shootings, Bridgeport enacted a youth curfew in August. The city is just now starting to enforce it.
Juveniles must be accompanied by a parent or guardian between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the week and past midnight on weekends.
The way the law works is anyone found in violation is given a warning. Then, parents face fines: $25 for a first offense, $50 for the second, and $99 for a third.
Bridgeport now joins dozens of cities with a youth curfew.
Enforcement and effectiveness across the nation varies.
Critics say the law can lead to racial profiling.
The American Civil Liberties Union opposes the idea.
The city will reevaluate its curfew in January and then decide whether or not it's an idea whose time has come.
