WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (WABC) -- Two young girls who were scared to go to school after the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings wrote President Obama and he wrote back!
"I couldn't wait to pick them up and hold them," said Suzy Kirk, a mother.
Suzy Kirk says seeing the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was incredibly difficult for her family.
Even harder was trying to find the words to comfort her 8-year-old daughter, Jacqueline, and 7-year-old daughter, Jessica.
The Post Road Elementary students just didn't feel safe at school anymore.
"Jacqueline's response to me was, 'Mommy is anybody going to do anything about this?'" Kirk said.
So Jacqueline had an idea: send a letter directly to President Barack Obama.
Her sister helped type it up.
"I asked my mom if I could write a letter to President Obama and she said sure. I said, 'But wait a minute, he's always so busy,'" said Jacqueline Kirk, a 4th grade student.
They knew reaching the president's eyes was a stretch and getting a response even more of a leap.
Jacqueline doesn't have a copy of the letter but she remembers exactly what she told him.
"I just want to tell you I don't feel safe in my school that much because of what I heard about the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. I didn't feel safe, that can happen anywhere," Jacqueline Kirk said.
Their mom couldn't believe it when she got the letter Tuesday morning.
"I was like, what was she reading? And my mom said she got a note from Obama! I was like oh my God!" said Jessica Kirk, a third grader.
Sure enough President Obama responded to the letter, reassuring the family that his administration is working to make all classrooms safe.
The best part the girls have quite a bit of bragging rights coming.
They're going to take the letter and photos to show and tell Wednesday in front of their classes.
