NEW YORK -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday signed into law the bill that changes term-limits law so that he can run again next year.
The bill-signing ceremony at City Hall drew dozens of New Yorkers who disagree with the way he and the City Council quickly approved the law change.
They told him that the voters should have had their say through a referendum. Voters twice approved term-limits in the 1990s.
It was just one month ago that the mayor announced he wanted another four years, arguing that the city needs him to stay on and manage its finances through the economic downturn. The council held two hearings and narrowly passed the law 10 days ago.
Under the previous term-limits law, officeholders were limited to two consecutive four-year terms.---
