WESTCHESTER (WABC) -- It wasn't just an upset. It was a rout.
Challenger Rob Astorino was elected as Westchester's new county executive. Outside his home on Wednesday, the 42-year old Republican called the margin of victory a mandate.
Indeed Astorino's campaign focused on one issue: cutting property taxes. Westchester's are the highest in the nation. Four years ago Astorino lost to Democrat Andy Spano, who was denied a fourth term this time around.
Astorino is a radio producer and served one term as a county legislator. He has pledged to cut spending by reducing the size of county government which has five thousand employees.
Spano supporters say Astorino simply rode a wave of an anti-incumbent sentiment. Many Astorino supporters disagreed with that assessment.Astorino admits property tax relief won't be easy or immediate, but cutting government will. He plans to reduce the county executive staff by 10 percent.
