Spitzer's opponents try to gain support for Stringer

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Eliot Spitzer's running not only against Scott Stringer for city comptroller, he's also facing a powerful coalition that's worried Spitzer could very well win this race.

One website called Forward New York writes of "an unprecedented flood of money from Eliot Spitzer's family fortune."

It goes on "Scott needs your help to level the playing field."

Tuesday, Spitzer said he's not surprised by this.

"You know, there are powerful people out there whose toes I've stepped on, it's their right to support independent expenditures. I've always been of the view that more speech is better," Spitzer said.

Stringer today blasted Spitzer, calling him a hypocrite, for saying Monday that he'd never vote for Anthony Weiner for mayor.

Weiner has a problem with sexting. Spitzer's problem is he hired prostitutes when he was Governor.

"There's the Eliot Spitzer set of rules that says 'I don't have to release my taxes for five years. I don't have to participate in the campaign finance program. I can lecture others but I don't have to hold myself accountable.' And then there are the rules for everybody else," Stringer said.

The latest polling shows Spitzer is in the lead, but not by a lot.

After weighing in on Weiner Monday, Spitzer on Tuesday was tight-lipped.

"Why are Anthony Weiner questions off the table for you?" Eyewitness News political reporter Dave Evans asked.

"I've answered them, just because look, I'm running for comptroller," Spitzer said.

Spitzer did find a lot of support with a group in Chinatown. It voted to back him and doesn't really care about his past problems.

"This is not a priest election. This is not to select a Pope. This is a financial officer. And we are at ease if he is in charge of the money," said George Hu, a Spitzer supporter.
