TRENTON -- A special primary will be held in New Jersey to fill the U.S. Senate seat that was left vacant by the late Frank Lautenberg.
On the Democratic ballot is Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Congressman Frank Pallone, Representative Rush Holt, and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.
Running on the Republican ticket is former Bogota mayor Steve Lonegan and Alieta Eck.
The candidates' biggest challenge may be getting people to the polls for the unprecedented mid-August election.
Politics watchers say a mere 200,000 or fewer voters could decide the primaries.
The winners will compete in an Oct. 16 special election.
The victor heads to Washington to complete the final 15 months of Sen. Frank Lautenberg's term. Lautenberg died in office in June at age 89.
Gov. Chris Christie set the special election date three weeks before the Nov. 5 gubernatorial election.
