Devils edge Carolina in game 5
NEWARK, N.J. -- Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy's NHL record for playoff shutouts, making 44 saves in New Jersey's 1-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night that moved the Devils within a win of advancing to the second round.
David Clarkson scored a rare power-play goal in helping Brodeur post his 23rd postseason shutout and win a great goaltending duel with Cam Ward, who stopped 41 shots.
With a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, New Jersey can eliminate the Hurricanes on Sunday in Carolina. If a seventh game is necessary, it would be here Tuesday night.
Brodeur's gem, which ended with the crowd shouting "Mar-tee! Mar-tee!" came just 48 hours after a 4-3 loss in Game 4 on a controversial goal by Jussi Jokinen with less than a second to play. Jokinen and Brodeur bumped in front of the crease seconds before the goal and Brodeur felt the officials should have blown the play dead.
After the goal was allowed, he argued with referee Eric Furlatt and then slammed his stick against the boards leaving the ice.
Brodeur kept his temper Thursday night in a game in which both goaltenders were bumped a few times.
Brodeur took the biggest hit when Chad LaRose and he collided about 20 feet in front of the net going for a loose puck in the first period.
LaRose's skate appeared to hit Brodeur's calf and the goaltender initially appeared hurt. However, when the officials allowed the play to continue, Brodeur dove to attempt to block Ray Whitney's shot that missed an open net.
The New Jersey goalie later took an interference penalty in front of his net, but that was his only bad moment.
Brodeur was outstanding in the net, particularly in the final two periods when Carolina came at him repeatedly, taking 35 shots.
Jokinen came closest to scoring with the game scoreless. His deflection in the second period, hit off the goal post, bounced off Brodeur's rear end and was on the goal line when Brodeur got a glove on the puck.
LaRose had three outstanding chances, including two in the final period. He was stopped on a 1-on-1 with Brodeur after skating through the defense with 8:35 left and again in the slot with 4:21 to go.
Brodeur made his last save in the final minute, stopping Whitney on a slap shot in the final minute.
Clarkson, who tied the game 3-all Tuesday, tallied at 11:22 of the second period with Patrick Eaves serving a tripping penalty.
Defenseman Andy Greene, who was in the lineup because Bryce Salvador suffered a knee injury Tuesday, took a shot from the right point that Clarkson deflected past Ward.
The Devils were 1-of-19 on the power play in the series when Clarkson converted.
Ward kept Carolina in the game midway in the third period with a snapping glove save on a blast by Zach Parise.
Notes: Canes LW Sergei Samsonov missed the game because of an undisclosed injury. D Anton Babchuk, who had four power-play goals in the regular season vs. the Devils was a healthy scratch. Dwight Helminen replaced Samsonov. Tim Conboy, who played in Game 1, took over for Babchuk. ... Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner missed his third straight game because of a lower-body injury. Salvador was out with a knee injury. ... The Canes were 0-for-5 on the power play and they are 1-for-19 in the series.
