Summer Safety Tips

NEW YORK -- Summer can be a magical time -- as long as you and your family stays safe. Here are some helpful tips:
- Remember you are using a lot of energy when you swim.
- Don't let children swim without an adult.
- Remove pool toys from water after use. Toys attract a kid's attention.
- Kids can forget they are thirsty. Always take water breaks.
- The best foods to beat the heat are foods that are cold and high in water content (watermelon, bananas and fresh vegetables).
- Avoid spicy and hot foods.
HEAT AND SUN SAFETY
- Try to limit outdoor activity. The hottest part of the day is from 1 to 4 p.m.
- The quickest way to test a child for dehydration is to pinch the skin on the back of his or her hand. If it goes back in place quickly, they're hydrated. If it takes up to a minute, they're dehydrated.
- Top signs of heat exhaustion: confusion, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea and fainting.
- Uncovered skin absorbs heat more quickly than covered skin, so always wear sunscreen when out in the sun.
- If a sunburn starts blistering for a few days, have it checked by a doctor.
- Select a beach where lifeguards are present because the chances of drowning are one in 18 million if a lifeguard is present.
- Ask a lifeguard about current and tide conditions.
- If you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the beach until the current weakens.
- For children, knee deep is TOO DEEP.
- When grass is dry and the air is warm, fires can spark easily.
- Don't throw cigarettes on the dry ground. That is a major brush fire starter.
- Clean your lawn of branches and dead plants.
- Stock up on food and water. You might need it for a few days.
- Get important papers and special photos in order and secured in plastic.
- Learn community hurricane evacuation routes and how to find higher ground.
- Playground surfaces could get up to 170 degrees in hot weather. Be cautious with your children.
- The more you scratch a bite, the more infected it will get.
- Never leave a grill unattended, especially when children are around.
