Steam main break causes subway problems

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

An underground steam main break on the Upper East Side slowed subway train service this morning.

Transit officials say the 12-inch steam main broke under East 79th Street, between Third and Lexington avenues. The break caused water to leak onto the express tracks used by the No. 4 and 5 trains.

Crews were working to pump out the water.

The latest train conditions:

  • Brooklyn bound No. 5 trains are suspended between the Nereid Avenue Station and the East 180th Street Station.
  • Selective No. 5 trains are running on the No. 2 line in both directions between the 149th Street / Grand Concourse Station and the Nevins Street Station at this time.

Transit officials said delays were expected on the No. 4, 5 and 6 and lines through the morning commute.
