Passengers in taxi as cops chase down cab

(Bronx - WABC, December 19, 2006) (WABC) -- Two terrified cab passengers were taken for a wild ride when their driver was pursued by police from Westchester County into the Woodlawn section of the Bronx .

Police say the cab driver, 34-year-old Garfield Richards, wouldn't pull over during a car stop on the Saw Mill River Parkway in Yonkers. Westchester County police, who were pulling the driver over for a broken tail light, chased him into the Bronx.

Authorities say during the chase, Richards terrified passengers pleaded for him to stop.

The cabbie was finally cornered at the Bronx River Parkway and 233rd Street just before 2:30 a.m.

Eyewitness News has learned at the end of the pursuit, Westchester County police cruiser ran into the back of a Yonkers police cruiser, slightly injuring one officer in each car. They were both treated for minor injuries.

The cab driver was hit with felony charges of assault and fleeing police officers. He is due in Yonkers City Court today, and will be turned over to the NYPD to face an outstanding drug charge.
