Police: Young man killed while subway surfing

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

A tragedy below ground. A man is killed while riding atop a subway car in Upper Manhattan.

Eyewitness news reporter Tim Fleischer is live in Hamilton Heights.

This all happened between 145th Street station and 155th on "C" line, but service is back to normal this morning.

Police say a young man, 21-years-old was riding on top of a train. That's when suddenly he fell off, and then was run over by the train.

This is an alarming situation. Police say there is concern by this accident because the saw a spat of these types of accidents back in 2003.

Back then, the victim was a young boy, just 14-years-old. He was apparently, trying to impress some of his friends at the time he was riding a train and was tragically killed.

Also, another man riding a train down in Greenwich Village, he then hit a steel girder that was overhead as the train went through the tunnel. Tragically he died as well.

As a result, transit officials today are dusting off an old campaign, basically saying "Surf the Web, not the Trains," because there are tragic consequences.
