M train collides with bumper at end of tracks

(New York - WABC, November 6, 2007) (WABC) -- A southbound M train crashed into a bumping block at Chambers and Centre Streets in lower Manhattan Tuesday.

Authorities say the accident happened just before 11 a.m.

It is not known how fast the train was going at the time or why it could not stop before hitting the bumping block, which is similar to a giant shock absorber at the end of a track.

Fire Battalion Chief Robert Norcross says there were no passengers aboard the train. He says the motorman was slightly injured.

Norcross had said it appeared least one car of the train may have gone off the tracks about 75 feet from the station. Transit Authority officials, however, say that none of the wheels left the tracks, though two cars were damaged.

There were no other trains involved in the accident.

The Transit Authority says Chambers Street is the end of the line for the M line after rush hour. It is likely the train was being moved into a position to return uptown.

Passengers on this train were discharged at Chambers prior the accident.

The M line at this time of day runs from Metropolitan Avenue in Middle Village, Queens and travels through Brooklyn to Chambers Street in lower Manhattan. At rush hour, M service is extended to Bay Parkway in Brooklyn.
