Gridlock Sam's traffic help for the holiday season

Friday, November 16, 2007

Gridlock Sam predicts traffic during the holiday season, on city and state roads will be worse this year than they were last year. More people are expected to travel this holiday season.

According to Gridlock Sam, Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day of the year which means there will be major traffic woes all day leading into Thursday.

Those expecting to travel are advised to allow up to an hour for traffic delays to area airports, bridges and tunnels and to use mass transit.

Here's a day by day traffic forecast:

  • Friday November 16th - First Gridlock Alert Day. Traffic to Manhattan to exceed one million cars.

  • Sunday November 18th - Air travel to soar. Around one hour delays at all area airports.

  • Tuesday November 20th - "Head start" day is now a top ten day at airports and rail terminals.

  • Wednesday November 21st - Biggest travel day of the year. Record six million cars expected on metro roads and airports with rail and bus terminals jammed to the limits. From Wednesday to Sunday, approximately 1.6 million people will travel through all three area airports, up two percent from last year.

  • Thursday November 22nd - Great morning to fly with seats available and cheap fares. Midtown Manhattan impassable due to parade. By the afternoon, roads are jammed as people head to Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Friday November 23rd - For shoppers and patrons, 60 percent more tickets are issued on this day and more cars are towed. It feels and smells like a major parking holiday, but all parking rules are in effect.

  • Sunday November 25th - The return home leaves metro roads, airports, rail and bus terminals packed.
