Sixth-and-a-Half Ave may be coming to Midtown

MIDTOWN (WABC) -- Pedestrians may soon walk through the heart of Midtown Manhattan without having to worry about cars.

The City Transportation Department plans to link open-air pedestrian plazas and open-access lobbies from 51st street to 57th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues creating a quarter-mile walkway through between office buildings and away from main streets.

The Bloomberg administration wants to add between avenue stop signs, speed bumps and pedestrian crossings along the six blocks. Some have deemed it Sixth and a Half Avenue and not everyone is happy.

Critics argue that the administration's plan is just latest in a series of steps that choke traffic flow and worsen an already congested section of Manhattan.
