Major water main break in Yonkers

Monday, August 27, 2012

A major water main break is impacting travel on the Saw Mill River and Cross County Parkways and affecting many residences in Yonkers.

A massive water main was punctured and now about 50,000 people have little or no running water.

Two main highways running through Yonkers were closed Monday night.

Crews are working frantically to get it all fixed before the morning commute.

Repair crews are carving up the Saw Mill River Parkway, trying to determine the extent of the damage to the water main.

Yonkers resident Sarah Llops has a handle on just how bad it is.

She hasn't had water in more than 10 hours and that poses a problem with little children to care for.

It could be a long night and maybe another 24 to 48 hours.

Yonkers city officials say it may take that long to get the damage to the water main repaired.

What a nightmare for tens of thousands of people.

Motorists who drive the Saw Mill have been severely impacted.

Vehicles are being re-routed around the water main break into neighborhoods.

And there was even a discussion about a potential evacuation of St. Joseph's Medical Center and as many as 400 patients. They didn't have water and the fire department had to pump it from a fire hydrant.

"What we're trying to do is bring water for our AC in the institution," said Dean Civitello, St. Joseph's Medical Center.

All of that was set in motion because of what happened Monday at around midday.

"A contractor hit the top of the main with a backhoe," said Tom Meyer, the Commissioner of the Department of Public Works.

Just like that there was a traffic nightmare and no water for thousands of people.

"Again to the residents of our city, try to be patient. We are working around the clock to deal with this issue," Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano said.
