Tunnel shutdown of R line under way for Superstorm Sandy repairs
NEW YORK (WABC) -- The commute gets tougher Monday, as it's the first workweek day that riders are dealing with the closure of the R subway line's Montague Street Tunnel.
The R train usually carries 65,000 people between Brooklyn and Manhattan, but that's impossible now.
The MTA has started a 14-month project in the tunnel to repair flood damage inflicted by Superstorm Sandy, which the agency said is so extensive that the tube will practically have to be rebuilt.
There will be no R line service between Court Street in Brooklyn and Whitehall Street in Manhattan, but some riders may get relief from the new ferry service being offered between Brooklyn and Manhattan.
It's $2 each way, from the Brooklyn Army Terminal at 58th Street in Sunset Park.
Ferries that leave from Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive in the Rockaways will make the Brooklyn stop before continuing to Pier 11, near the South Street Seaport, and East 34th Street in Manhattan.
