Severe storms batter the New York area
NEW YORK (WABC) -- Utility crews have restored electricity to a New Jersey town that took a pounding in a weekend thunderstorm.
Workers are cleaning up the damage in Freehold Tuesday following a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
Forecasters believe a "supercell" storm packing wind gusts of more than 60 mph blasted the community on Saturday. The strong winds uprooted and snapped trees and downed power lines.
About a dozen roads were closed until the debris was cleared.
The first wave of storms, which contained lightning and heavy rains, knocked out power to about 30,000 customers on Saturday afternoon. And thousands more lost their service when more severe thunderstorms hit late Saturday night and early Sunday, knocking down numerous trees and power lines.
The storms damaged several tents and the grounds at the Monmouth County Fair in Freehold Township, forcing officials to cancel the fair's final day of events on Sunday.
