J.R. Kirtek

J.R. Kirtek
J.R. is the Chief Meteorologist at ABC12 and Weather Anchor for ABC12 News at 5, 6, and 11.

Prior to joining the ABC12 News staff, J.R. worked as a meteorologist for WXYZ, Detroit; KSDK, St. Louis, MO; WLNS-TV, Lansing; and at WILX in Lansing. He also worked for CWS, Inc.; a private weather-consulting firm based in Flint.

J.R. is a member of the American Meteorological Society and is a current member of the Southeast Michigan Chapter of the A.M.S. He holds the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Television Weathercasting.

J.R. is an honor graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Science in Ann Arbor. He was a member of the 1985 National Championship Weather Forecasting Team from the University of Michigan.

J. R. was born and raised in Troy, Michigan and graduated from Athens High School.

He and his wife, Dr. Kathleen Kirtek, have five children.
