Zilwaukee student drowns during field trip

SAGINAW (WJRT) -- (06/03/09) -- A fifth grader from Zilwaukee Elementary School has drowned while on a school field trip.

It happened last night at the Holiday Inn Express in Mackinaw City.

Jaylyn Ferguson was one of the 38 fifth graders on the school field trip.

Mackinaw City Police Chief Patrick Wyman said this morning that 20 or 25 students were in the hotel pool when Jaylyn drowned. He said this could be a case where there was a lot of commotion and chaperones lost track of the youngster.

There was no lifeguard on duty.

The boy was administered CPR during the entire time he was being transported to Straits Area Hospital in Saint Ignace, but it was too late.

Saginaw schools spokeswoman Sayfia Mosley didn't want to go on camera about the situation, but said grief counselors will be on hand, as the bus is scheduled to return sometime this afternoon.
