Fort Saginaw Mall coming down

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

(11/18/09)--Wednesday was a bittersweet day in Buena Vista Township, where a piece of the community's history is coming down.

The Fort Saginaw Mall has sat at the corner of Outer Drive and Holland Avenue since the 1960s. The mall's last tenant moved out five years ago.

Following a legal battle, the eyesore is finally being torn down. Over the last week the old Kmart tire center was torn down, and so was an old Wendy's in the parking lot.

Construction crews have started work on the mall.

"I remember when the mall was booming," said Larry Monroe.

"It's so sad, you know? Because that's part of my childhood," said Danielle Monroe, who worked at the Kmart store once.

The Kmart was the last store to leave the mall back in 2004.

Built in the 1960s, the mall thrived for years. But when it became clear that the mall was no longer viable, the township decided it was time for it to go.

It took ownership in 2008.

Demolition crews say Fort Saginaw will be flattened in a few weeks, and by year's end it will be an empty lot. The township hopes someone will want to redevelop the land, and so do residents.
